How to Prepare for Speaking Section?

Why is there a speaking section?

Speaking reflects your coherence in thoughts. The problem- to -solution progression. The ability to think and speak about a topic.Communication of ideas effectively. And yes, the ability to reason..with examples.

Two tasks about familiar topics .For eg:What type of clothing do you prefer? Casuals of formals.

  • This is easy.Make your pick.Give three points which justify your answer.
  • Say for the above topic: you could say I prefer casuals to formals because they make me feel comfortable and reflect my attitude best. Iam a down to earth person and hence this stlye of clothing suits me well.Casulas also offer a wide range of clothing to choose from unlike formals. So on any given day I’d step out in a pair of jeans rather than trousers.
  • You get the drill? Well you have 15 secs preparation time so quickly jot down points and link them up when you are speaking. You need to speak for 45 secs and its ok to finish two or three seconds before time. But don’t overshoot.

Two tasks .This task includes integration of a reading passage followed by a talk on that passage.

  • You need to combine information from both the materials and
  • One task is based on a campus-related situation, and the other is based on some academic material.
  • Use the notes . Not for doodles but to note down points.

Two tasks based purely on listening.

  • You need to summarize the entire situation.
  • Task one is to summarize a conversation between two people on any situation mostly campus-related.
  • The other is based on you giving an opinion.Be careful to read what you’ve been asked to do.
  • Again, use the notes.

How to prepare for Speaking Section?

Well the first point being

  • Get used to talking to the computer. It feels very awkward the first few times.and try not to go blank.Do not listen to other’s responses. That’s hard to do because its way too much fun.
  • Controlled use of language. The sentences can be simple and short.
  • Jot down points. Use the template
  • 1)Reason #1
  • 2) Specific detail that supports it.
  • 3)Reason #2
  • 4) Specific detail that supports it.
  • 5) Conclusion.
  • For the integrated tasks. Like the reading+listening on use the reason from the reading passage and support it with detail and example from the listen. Follow the above template but alternate it with reading and listening. Like this 1) Reason from reading.2) Detail from listening/ fact that supports it., so on and so forth.
  • Avoid using colorful vocabulary.Especially the extremely popular four letter words.
  • Show continuity in thoughts. Incoherence suggests that you are a confused person.
  • The integrated tasks often have 30 secs prep time and 60 secs speaking time. Pace your response.Do NOT panic.
