How to Prepare for Reading Section?

Why is there a reading section?

It measures the test taker’s ability to understand written material,to recognize the overview of the entire passage. It’s the reading comprehension with a few new twisted question types.

The question types are:

  • Meanings or antonyms of words in the passage- the easiest, can be found with reference to context.
  • Inference questions- what you understand from a particular statement in the passage.
  • Inserstion questions or the black dot questions. Insert the line in the most suited place in the paragraph.Tests understanding the flow of thought.
  • Summary questions-These questions fetch two marks for one question. You are required to summarize a 150 word passage in three lines.
  • Plain questions/ Questions on Detail. Just answer according to the passage.
How to crack reading?

Well, reading comprehension is considered one of the toughest sections. But by following a few techniques it is easier to dread it less.

  • Quick read. Obtain the purpose of writing the passage.Ask “why did the author write this?”
  • Gather the main idea of the passage. A passage is usually about a single point of view and instancs and facts that support is. SO it is basically the same point being reiterated every time.
  • Do NOT memorize the entire passage. Its too ridiculous to even explain why it shouldn’t be done. Just try to recollect where everything fits.
  • See the question type. Spend maximum time on the summary question. Each question needs to be tackled differently.
  • Avoid answer options that have the same wordings as lines in the passage. It’s an ETS trap.
  • In the summary question, choose options(you will have to choose 3 out of 6)which support the main idea of the passage.Lines that give detail should be avoided.
  • Insertion of the new line at the most suitable place will have to be in cohesion with the train of thoughts. Not jumbled.Let’s look at it this way. The structure can be like this assumption/statement->explanation/detail->example->conclusion.So fit it in.
  • The reading section allows you to skip questions and come back to them later. So answer all the direct questions first.Synonyms etc.
